Ghouls are a carnivorous and cannibalistic humanoid species who are restricted to a diet of Human and Ghoul Flesh because of their need for RC Cells. While superficially identical to humans in appearance, ghouls possess radically different internal biology, namely the Kakuhou Organ which allows them to activate RC Cells and Manifest a Kagune.
Ghouls are actively hunted by the CCG due to their nature as predators of humans. Government laws restrict ghouls from having any legal rights and defines harsh punishments to those protecting or harboring them.

There is no concensus on the origins of ghouls quiet yet. Some point to ancient tales of man-eating monsters and vampires to suggest they've always been around, some theorize they're the product of an ancient or manmade virus.
The CCG's Science & Research Division claims that ghouls are a branched subspecies of human being that had explosive RC devlopment leading to the creation of the Kakuhou. The CCG still maintain that ghoul's predatory nature makes them too large of a threat to allow for open coexistance.

Ghouls can only consume RC-rich human flesh. Their bodies produce a particular enzyme that prevents them from properly digesting normal human food, this enzyme is a byproduct of RC Cell activation. Their tongues are also structured very differently from a humans making food not containing RC Cells taste repulsive to them. If a ghoul consumed human food they will become physically sick.
Ghouls do not need to eat every day like humans. They can consume an entire human body in one sitting and that will keep them fed for 14-21 days.

Though ghouls are outwardly indistinguishable from humans, their internal biology is defined by a complex network of RC-based systems. Chief among these is their dependency on α-RC Cells—nutrient-dense, regenerative fuel only found in human flesh. Without a steady intake of these cells, a ghoul's body begins to break down, first cognitively, then physically.
The core of this system lies in the Kakuhou. The Kakuhou is a specialized organ that primarily stores and activates RC Cells. It fuels what are called Kakuhou Sacks, which are the suborgans that are responsible for manifesting the kagune itself.
Ghouls possess superhuman physical capabilities. They're much stronger, faster, and sharper than the average human: a powerful predator species. Their skin is extremely tough as well. Normal knives and even bullets would not even penetrate a ghoul's skin. Larger caliber bullets will perice skin as well as normal objects hitting with immense kinetic force (i.e steel beams falling from 15 stories up) could still greatly harm or kill a ghoul.
Ghouls have a very powerful sense of smell. They can smell people, meat, and under certain circumstances tell ghouls apart from humans. What they're smelling is related to RC Cells and the type of RC Cells the individual has. It's possible for a ghoul to mask their scent if they clean themselves often and mask their scent with perfume/cologne.
The average Ghoul will generally have 1000-5000 RC Cells in their body, this is roughly 10 times higher than the average human who has 200-500 RC Cells in their body. Kakuhou activate RC Cells into 4 different categories of deployment: Rinkaku, Ukaku, Koukaku, and Bikaku. After activation the cells will have slightly different properties: Rinkaku is the most fluid and quickest travelling, Ukaku are the most volitile, Koukaku are the densest, and Bikaku is the most balanced.
Ghouls will generally consume only human flesh, but in rare or dire cases some ghouls might cannibalize other ghouls for RC. It's said that ghouls taste "rotten" because of their preactived β-RC.
In extremely rare cases, a ghoul whose parents possess different Rc types will inherit both from their parents. This results in a ghoul that possesses a kakuhou in more than one location and is able to use two different types of kagune. This is known as a Hybrid Kagune. In even rarer cases a ghoul can mutate a third kagune type. This is known as a Chimera Kagune. A Full Chimera is theoretically possible, but has never been sighted.
Though powerful and durable predators, ghouls are still far from immortal. Despite their superior physical status, ghouls age at the same rate as humans. All ghouls, though resistant to damage from man-made objects, are vulnerable to damage or modifications made to their mucous membranes, such as nostrils, eyes, ears, and lips.
Generally, a ghoul will die if it suffers massive trauma that proves fatal before its innate healing ability can stabilize its condition. The most damage that can be inflicted to a ghoul usually comes from other ghouls, as they have the physical strength and the use of their kagune that can deal heavy damage to a ghoul. However, they are also vulnerable to Quinque, Q-bullets, and other Ghoul Countermeasure technology.

Ghouls primarily function in one of two ways. The first is to live on the fringes of society, sleeping on the streets and backalleys, keeping to themselves and avoiding detection as well as they can. The second and more common is to integrate into Human Society. They adopt complex identities, forge legal documents, attend human schools, and work human jobs and try to blend into the human world as best they can. Some ghoul families or individuals have managed to gain great wealth and even raise themselves into positions of government or social power.
Some ghouls prefer to live as hermits instead. Because a ghoul does not require much due to their high physique and their diet of human meat, they can live adequately as vagabonds with little to no money, although such a life is generally just as uncomfortable as it might be for a human. Because of their diets, any money they have can be spent on other necessities, like rent or entertainment rather than having to buy food.
Ghouls have a tendency to "Claim" territories and feeding grounds. It's not uncommon for there to be disjointed bands of ghouls who claim ownership over portions or entire wards of Tokyo.
Tokyo ghouls in particular have a proclivity toward wearing custom-made masks to conceal their identity. The CCG often gives ghouls aliases based on their mask or kagune appearance.

There have been rare instances of Human-Ghoul hybrids existing in Tokyo and around the world. There are two methods in which a One Eyed Ghoul can be created. The first is through an experimental "Kakuhou Translplant". This creates what is known as an "Artificial One Eyed Ghoul" also known as an AOEG. A "Natural One Eyed Ghoul" or NOEG is a naturally born human-ghoul hybrid. NOEGs are extremely rare, most of them dying far before they're born.
Unlike One Eyed Ghouls, Half-Humans are biologically closer to human than ghoul. They do not possess a kakuhou and cannot generate a kagune, but they have significantly elevated physical traits. Often created and conditioned in highly controlled environments, Half-Humans are usually employed by the CCG in elite combat roles. Their high performance comes at a cost—extreme physiological instability and shortened lifespans.
This term refers to a rare RC Cell mutation found in some ghouls which allows their kagune to generate high-output energy effects, typically thermal or electrical in nature. These mutations do not alter the kagune’s base form, but they enhance it with volatile properties—flame-like eruptions, arcs of electricity, or extreme heat conduction. Psuedo-kinetic kagune often exhibit unstable behavior under stress, and require significant control to prevent self-injury. The mutation is extremely rare
Chimera Ghouls are those with two or more kagune types, an extremely rare condition often caused by cross-type heredity or forced cannibalism. Most chimera possess two kagune simultaneously, but theoretical models suggest a “full chimera” could exist—one who manifests all four. No such case has ever been confirmed. Hybrid Ghouls are a broader category referring to any ghoul whose biology blends incompatible RC types or structural anomalies.
A kakuja is a ghoul who has devloped a powerful armor-like kagune via a mutation through repeated ghoul canibalism. Kakuja are extremely powerful, but generally very unstable.
Ghouls can smoke and have allergies to substances like metal, plastic, etc.
Ghouls can consume some high-proof alcohol. It will taste worse. Sweeter drinks will taste rotten, but will not induce vomiting like normal food. Ghouls have sometimes been known to make a "blood wine" mixture, though it tastes nothing like wine it's a pleasant way for ghouls to drink alcohol.
