Red Child Cells, more commonly known as "Red Child Cells", are the foundation of Ghoul Physiology. These cells get their name from their fetus-like appearance and are found in all human beings. Curiously, these cells are only found in Humans and Ghouls.
RC Cells are highly versitile and unique biological units that function closer to pluripotent stem cells rather than the red blood cells they are often compared to. RC Cells store an immense amount of energy. They are able to heal all types of biological tissue and act as a powerful chemical/biological fuel for technology like Quinque
RC Cells are divided into three disctinct categories. These three categories are what informs the ghoul's restriction to eating Human Flesh.
α-RC Cells // Human Cells
These cells are produced exclusively by human bone marrow. Ghouls cannot create α-RC Cells on their own, making them entirely dependent on human flesh to acquire them. They are essential for sustaining advanced regenerative processes and are responsible for the savory flavor that ghouls perceive when consuming human meat.
β-RC Cells // Ghoul Cells
β-RC Cells are what the Kakuhou turn α-RC Cells into. The kakuhou organ is responsible for activating RC Cells, activated RC Cells lose their cellular complexity and nutritional weight. Most of the potentcy the cell is lost upon activation. Ghouls are able to produce small amounts of their own β-RC Cells, but it is not enough to sustain themselves.
β-RC Cells undergo a signature change once passed through the kakuhou. This signature is what Quinque resonate with to achieve their anti-ghoul capabilities.
γ-RC Cells // Hybrid Cells
γ-RC Cells are a biological anomoly. These cells are exclusive to Natural One Eyed Ghouls (NOEGs). This type of cell is a rare hybridization of both RC types. The kakuhou of a NOEG is able to restore a large portion of their spent energy from what would be β-RCC, allowing them to preserve more energy per cell.
These unique cells are what allow NOEGs to consume Huamn food without consequence or revulsion, though they still require human flesh to survive and avoid starvation.
Not all RC Cells are created equal. Of course there's the obvious α-cells are better than β-cells, but a heirarchy also exists within these cell types.
RC Cell quality is generally referring to the potency of the energy stored within the α-cell. This is almost completely a genetic factor, some people's body will just create more potent cells in their marrow. There is generally a correlation between abnormally low RC Counts in humans and high RC quality because the body uses more energy to create the cells it will end up creating less over time.
Ghoul kakuhous can also be more efficient at activating the RC they consume. This creates high quality β RCC that allows for faster Regeneration, stronger kagune, and a higher chance of mutation.
RC Pathways are a complex, semi-organic network of conduits that weave throughout a ghoul’s body. These pathways act as the biological channels for transporting activated RC Cells to necessary sites, whether to mend damaged tissue, fuel physical enhancement, or manifest kagune. Much like blood vessels, they are spread throughout the body but operate on a different system of activation and storage, responding directly to RC load and cellular demand.
In Ghouls, RC Pathways are a congenital trait. From birth, they begin as dense knots of RC-reactive tissue near the spine and organs. As the ghoul matures, these initial hubs branch out into finer pathways that stretch into the limbs, muscles, and even bone. The scope and responsiveness of these pathways—particularly how quickly they can transfer RC energy—are determined by genetics, environmental pressure, and overall RC Quality.
Artificial Half-Ghouls (AOEGs), in contrast, are not born with these pathways. Instead, they must develop them through exposure and trauma. Following surgical RC implantation, their bodies treat the new RC presence as both threat and necessity. This results in the formation of adaptive RC Pathways, often developing within the bone marrow and other deep tissues first. Although slower to manifest, these pathways can grow denser and more flexible than those of natural ghouls, granting AOEGs an extreme potential ceiling—if they survive the process.
Each individual ghoul also possesses a unique RC Signature: an energy “print” formed during RC cell activation and resonance within their kakuhou. RC Signatures serve as both a biological ID and a tuning frequency. CCG Quinques are calibrated to target and disrupt specific RC Signatures, allowing them to bypass most regeneration. These signatures can be traced, cataloged, and in some cases forged or masked, making them central to anti-ghoul warfare and ghoul counter-surveillance alike.
Synthetic RC Cells do not currently exist in the world, though research is theorized.
RC Cells are studied and monitored by the RC Science & Research Division within the CCG.
In some rare cases, ghoul RC Signatures have been found to fluctuate over time, particularly in ghouls undergoing heavy trauma or cannibalization. This can lead to inconsistencies in CCG registry data.
Ghoul children often show higher RC Pathway density at earlier ages than adult ghouls did at the same stage, leading researchers to believe RC expression may be accelerating generationally.
